Vondelpark – Largest and Most Popular City Park in Amsterdam
If New York has Central Park, London has Hyde Park, and Madrid has Retiro Park, then Amsterdam has Vondelpark. Vondelpark is the largest and most popular city park in Amsterdam, this park is very popular among local residents and visitors, ten million people visit Vondelpark every year.
Vondelpark of Amsterdam became a gathering place for local citizens and tourists along with their relatives. This park is ideal for enjoying sunny days with warm sunshine, jogging, walks with pet, relax and enjoy the beauty of the park, playing, sunbathing, picnics, cycling, and also skateboarding. The Vondelpark also have a museum, playground, as well as several cafes and restaurants. Lucht Theater, an open stage in the Vondelpark often hold free performances, especially during the months of July and August. The live show such as music concerts, dance performances, theaters, etc.
History of Vondelpark
In 1864 a group of citizens of Amsterdam raise funds for the construction of a city park. The funds then used to bought an 8 hectares area. Open Green space was officially opened to the public in 1865 with the name of Nieuwe Park. At that time the Park widely used only for walk around and also horse riding. Vondelpark name was not used until 1867. The next years fundraising are implemented again and used to expand the land up to 45 hectares.
