History of Tofukuji

Every temple in Japan including Tofukuji has its own history. It even traces back a few centuries ago. According to the history, this temple was built in 13th century. Being among the largest triple temple gate in Japan, it has been designated as national treasure for few centuries.

Gardens on Four Directions

Once you step into the temple, you will be amazed with multiple gardens on the south, west east and north of the temple. These four gardens are usually called as Hasso Garden which represents the modern garden of Zen Buddhist. The unique thing is each garden has its own atmosphere so you will be like entering a new world. The north side garden for instance is best known for its stones and moss. All the gardens are very well preserved which make them perfect places to take photos and to enjoy the tranquility. That is the reason why this temple is very crowded during certain holidays. Therefore, make sure to come at the right time so you can avoid insane crowds at least.

Aside from beautiful gardens at four directions, Tofukuji is also known for its over than 2.000 maple trees that give the superb views. These thousands of maple trees make the perfect spot to enjoy the beautifully colored leaves in Kyoto. In fact, you will see a lot of people make trip to Kyoto just to see the falling leaves. This temple has the most popular spot to enjoy the leaves. It is on the Tsuten-kyo Bridge. To enter the bridge, you have to pay 400 yen for admission fee which is not much compared to the natural beauty you are about to see. With this beautiful landscaping, it is such a waste if you make a trip alone to this place.

Richness in history of Tofukuji is simply abundance. The physical temple building is not the only thing that makes Tofukuji very popular. Apparently, this is among the historical temples that hold many cultural properties. In this temple alone, there are over than 5.000 cultural properties that include writings, paintings, Buddhist images, architectural structures and so many more. So, when you make a trip to this temple, you will learn deeper about the history of Tofukuji and the Buddhist temples in Kyoto in general.

Tofukuji is located in 15 Hon Machi, in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto-shi in Kyoto. To enter the temple, you have to pay for admission fee as much as 400 yen and another 400 yen to enter the garden.
