Le Palais Ideal – Astonishing Castle Built by a Postman
Rome wasn’t built in one night, the proverb is suitable for an unique building Le Palais Ideal in Hauterives, France. The building is very beautiful and the design is really impressive, The Palace is regarded as an extraordinary example of naive art architecture. If we look closer, Le Palais Ideal looks like a Hindu temple in India, with an additional touch of Christian values.
Le Palais Ideal was built by Ferdinand Cheval alone for 33 years. Ferdinand Cheval is not an architect, he even did not understand anything about the art of building, he was just a postman.
The story begins in 1879. Joseph-Ferdinand Cheval (1836-1924), 43, had worked as a postman for 12 years. Because of his routine daily work he travel about 20, mostly in solitude. One day he tripped by a small stone. Surprised by the shape and composition of the stone, he tooks it home.
Surprisingly, Ferdianand having dreams and seeing himself build a castle of the stones. that dream inspired Ferdinand to build a palace that would be known as Le Palais Ideal.
Since then, Ferdinand is not only deliver the mail, but also bring a stroller to collect stones met on the street.
After 33 years of building, finally Le Palais Ideal finished completely in 1912. The outer wall has a width of 24 meters, and a height of 10 meter. In addition to using picked stones, Ferdinand also uses limestone and mortar.
Upon the completion of the Palais idéal, the building began to attract international attention. People come from far away to see this amazing building. many well-known artists visit and get inspiration from Le Palais Ideal, The Building even depicted in the postcards and magazines.
