Lake Kelimutu (Indonesia) – Magical Three Colors Lake
Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has some exotic places that worth to visit. There are so many islands which have stunning natural beauty, One of them is on the peak of Mount Kelimutu, namely Lake Kelimutu. Lake Kelimutu also called as Three Colors Lake, because the lake has three different colors. Miraculously the water colors inside the lake is changing over time.
Lake Kelimutu is a crater lake located on top of Kelimutu volcano (1,690 masl) located on the island of Flores, NTT Province, Indonesia. The location of this mountain, in the village Pemo, District Kelimutu, Ende.
Lake Kelimutu was firstly discovered in 1915 by a Dutchman named Van Such Telen. He was seen that at the peak of Mount Kelimutu There are three lakes in red, white and blue. Initially residents were not believe what he was said because the three colors mentioned by Telen is same color as the flag of the Netherlands.
Lake Kelimutu is a tourism icon of the island of Flores. Kelimutu itself is a combination of the 2 words: “keli” meaning mountain, and “Mutu” which means boiling.
local people believe that the lake is a sacred place and can gives fertility to their area. That’s why often held ceremonies at the lake where people give yield offerings to the spirits of the lake.
All three lakes which have different colors on top of Mount Kelimutu have their own names. Locals believe that the lake is the dwelling place of the souls of those who died. Here are the names, colors and legends of the three color lakes Kelimutu:
- Ata Tiwu Mbupu (white lake), where the spirits of old man died
- Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (blue lake) where the spirits of the young man died
- Tiwu Ata Polo (red lake) where the spirits of bad man died.
From the three lakes of Kelimutu, which has its color changed the most is Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai. According to local residents, it is possible because the soul that occupies the lake is still young and unstable that affect the color of the lake water.
Lake Kelimutu is a beautiful place that can be enjoyed throughout the day. However, the best time to enjoy this magical place is in the morning, at sunrise. For those of you who want to enjoy the sunrise advised to stay in the village of Moni and set off at dawn. The journey from the Moni village to the foot of the mountain kelimutu is about 45 minutes, When traveling from foot of the mountain to the top of Kelimutu is about 20 minutes.
