Kyoto Tower – Magnificent Tower in The Old City

Every major city definitely has a favorite spot to view the city from a height. Tokyo has its Tokyo Tower and Tokyo-Skytree, Paris has the Eiffel Tower, Jakarta has Monas, etc. These spots usually becomes one of the most favorite tourist destination of the city.

As one of the most popular tourist destinations city in Japan, Kyoto is also has an incredible observation tower, called the Kyoto Tower. the tower is known as the landmark of the city and it is one of the ‘must visit’ destination for visitors of Kyoto. The tower is located right in front of Kyoto station (precisely at the top of the Kyoto Tower Hotel), so it is very easy accessed from any directions in Kyoto.

Kyoto is indeed known as one of the cultural center in Japan, but that does not mean the district is far from a touch of modernity. This is evidenced by the existence of the Kyoto Tower, as one of the best tourist destinations of Kyoto and symbolize the modernity of its community.

The original purpose of the building of the Kyoto Tower is to enliven the atmosphere when the Summer Olympic was take place in Kyoto. After going through series of long debate considering the construction of the tower is so controversy (because the Tower was considered too modern for the atmosphere of the city of Kyoto which has the image of the old city), eventually the tower can be built in 1963, and successfully completed in 1964. Kyoto Tower officially opened on December 28, 1964, and immediately caught the attention of 1 million visitors in its first year.

Travelling to Kyoto Tower is usually not the main goal when traveling to the city of Kyoto, Japan, but because its location conveniently located facing the Kyoto railway station, when a tourist using the train, they would easily see the Kyoto tower standing tall in front of their eyes.

The tower was designed to resemble the traditional candle of Japan. There are 9 elevator that can take visitors to the observation area at a height of 100 meters above the ground. The observation area has a capacity of 500 people, and its designed a circularly and lined by a large glass wall, allowing 360-degree views of whole Kyoto. That’s not all the interesting part in this observation room, There are a number of telescopes that can be borrowed free of charge, so that visitors can more freely see the sights of Kyoto.

At the base of the Tower, a circular area contained in the Kyoto Tower Hotel rooftop, that is a three-floors restaurant named Sky Lounge. visitors who want to try culinary tour while enjoying the view Kyoto from high altitude are highly suggested to come to the restaurant. On the first floor of this building also contains some souvenir shops that offer typical souvenirs of Kyoto Tower. 

In the Kyoto Tower there also a Mosque for Muslims to pray. visitors who want to pray just need to asked for permission to access prayer room. Visitor will be told to write an entry from.

Located right behind the building of Kyoto Tower there is Yodobashi electronics store, a complete electronic shopping center that quite famous in Japan. So, if you haven’t yet had a chance to hunt electronic goods in Tokyo or other big cities in Japan, then a visit to Kyoto Tower could also be used to hunt original electrical goods made in Japan.

Location of Kyoto Tower is exactly located on Karasuma-dori Shichijo-sagaru, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto and operate every day starting at 09:00 to 20:00. The entrance ticket price is 770 yen, and will be cheaper for school students.
