Kinderdijk – Best Place to See Windmills of Netherland
Kinderdijk is one of the best destination that can be visited to watch the beauty of Dutch windmills directly. Kinderdijk is a traditional Dutch village which is located only 15 minutes from the city of Rotterdam. Because of the uniqueness of the windmills that are still original and has existed since the 18th century, then in 1997 Kinderdijk were included in UNESCO world heritage list.
This village is a very beautiful place with a peaceful atmosphere typical of dutch earlier times. Enjoying Kinderdijk air for several hours, make you feel live in the Dutch old-times, especially when walking in the afternoon with old windmills surround and the clean canals.
In Kinderdijk, most of the water comes from confluence of River Lek and River Noord. In this region there are several bridges and wooden docks crossing the canal’s calm water. Along the way you also can see lot of wild ducks playing on the water as well as some wild birds.
The purpose of the creation of a windmill in ancient times is to pump excess water into the reservoir until the river level low enough to pump the water back to the river, due to the altitude of Kinderdijk is 7 meters below sea level.
Although windmills have been replaced by more efficient diesel pumps, they are still maintained in very good condition as a backup if modern equipments failure to work properly.
This windmills technology is one proof of superiority of Netherlands in water management. Not surprisingly, this state become so popular for its water management.
Kinderdijk open from morning until 16:00 or 17:00 depends on the season, with a cost of 6.30 euro / person.
We also can enjoy a boat trip along the canals with the windmills on the left and right. One of the Windmill in Kinderdijk act as a small museum showing the lives of old Dutch.
