Is it your first time in Kyoto? Then you have to visit the most popular palace in this town known as Kyoto Imperial Palace. This is a particular castle that has classical Japanese style with walled compound that contain several different sumptuous building. Just like most classical Japanese building, this palace has wooden construction and low rooflines. Although the buildings and the gardens are actually a little new when compared to other historical buildings like Sento Gosho and Kasturea Rikyu but this palace still holds its own uniqueness and historical richness. Therefore, it can be a perfect spot to spend the holiday with your family.

Inside this palace, there is the so called Sento Imperial Palace that comes as the secondary place in the complex. Built in 1630, it was used at retirement palace by the Emperor Gumizono. Then, it became particular palace to be used by subsequent retired emperors. Besides the Sento Imperial Palace, there is also the Omiya Palace that was built in 1867 and was used as lodging place for princess and prince during their Kyoto visit.

When you decide to visit the Sento Imperial Palace, you have to join free group tour with Imperial Household Agency as the leader to manage the Imperial properties. This tour will bring you to explore the whole castle including Sento garden that is located on the South Pond and North Pond areas. These gardens have actually become beautiful practices of strolling garden. This tour only lasts about an hour only and in Japanese only. However, there are audio guides available in several languages. When you visit this palace, do not expect to be able to enter the palace buildings except the Seikatei teahouse that is always left open. This teahouse building will give you hints about the great imperial style and design.

Route to Kyoto Imperial Palace

To get to this palace is considerably easy even though you have never been to Kyoto before. If you choose to use the public transportation, the train is your best option. You have to depart from Kyoto station using the Karasuma Subway Line. Then, get off at Imadegawa or Marutamachi Station that is only 10 minutes’ walk to the palace. As Japan has been known for their neat and organized public transportation, you shall have nothing to worry about using the train, bus or other transportation.

To be able to enter the Kyoto Imperial Palace, you have to apply to Imperial Household Office of known as Kunaicho. Its office is located inside the Imperial Palace of Kyoto. Then, you must fill in an application and show your passport for your identification. However, if you are under 20 years old, you have to be accompanied by adults to be able to enter this garden. If you also want to enter the Sento Imperial Palace as well, make sure you don’t come on Monday because there are no free tours held on Monday. During peak season, you can also book the admission permit in advance.
