HAGIA SOPHIA – MAGNIFICENT TREASURE OF ISTANBUL
Hagia Sophia Museum in the city of Istanbul, Turkey could be said as one of the most important relic of history that describe development of civilization of the country.
Haghia Sophia is a landmark of the city of Istanbul in addition to the Blue Mosque, it is a magnificent building that you must-see if you set foot in this city. Well, this building is an important world heritage that already thousands of years old and has a long history of the past for the people especially for Christians and Muslims.
Hagia Sophia is derived from the Greek word meaning Aγια Σοφία Holy Wisdom. it was used as a church for 916 years since it firstly built in 537 and switching function as a mosque during 481 years.
Hagia Sophia is the greatest building of its time. Dome of the building is 55.6 meters height and considered as the icon of Byzantine architecture and also claimed as the largest cathedral in the world for 1,000 years. Hagia Sophia in the past decorated with gold, studded with gems on the wall, hundreds of mosaic paintings and other works of art, it was a very beautiful building and make people in it is like surrounded by stars.
In 1935 when Turkey became a Republic, its first president Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, ordered to change the Hagia Sophia became a museum. Given his age, the richness of its history and the beauty of its architecture, in 1985, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Behind the Hagia Sophia there are tombs building or mausoleums. This is a place where the tomb of the Sultan and his family located, for example, Sultan Murad III, Sultan Mehmet III, Sultan Selim etc.
To enter the Hagia Sophia entry ticket price is 25 Lira, it is better to come early if do not want to stand in long lines. The museum opened 09.00 until 19.00, On Monday the museum is closed.
