Enjoying Mediterranean Sea Breeze at Sitges
Sitges is a town located in Mediterranean coast about 35 kilometers southwest of Barcelona, Spain. The city is famous for its beaches and the best tourism facilities they provide. The weather there is very enjoyable throughout the year. So, you can go there anytime you like and still able to do outdoor activities and enjoy the sun. Sitges is a home for more than 28,000 people, 30% of them are foreigners. It makes the city has its own character and charm.
Festivals in Sitges
Besides enjoying the sea view, you can also see many festivals and ceremony held in Sitges, ranging from the cultural events like music and film festival to sports events like Sitges annual triathlon. Sitges film festival is one of the biggest film festivals held in Spain. It usually specializes in horror and fantasy movies. You have to come in early October if you want to participate in the festival. Sitges film festival gives awards for international movies in many categories like best picture, best actor, best director, etc.
Another interesting festival is Festa Major, which is held on August 21st to August 27th. It is held to honor Santa Tecla and Sant Bartomeu, they both are the shared patrons of the city. The first day of the festival will only be filled with speech. The festival starts to roll out on the second day when the Sant Bartomeu’s flag is given to the president of the Festa Major. The third day will be opened by the music from the gallers who enter the town from Sant Francesc and then go to Cap de la Villa, Calle Major and finally finish at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The people begin to gather at Placa del Ajuntament in the afternoon when the carnival group starts marching from there to Cap de la Villa.
On 24th August, the festival starts at 6 a.m. in the morning. The people are dancing on the street and giving flowers to lady spectators. The dancers then gather in the town hall where the carnival is ended by building human towers or castles. The carnival is done for the day and in the night, the spectators will be enjoyed by spectacular fireworks that can be seen from the beach. This might be the most enjoyable festival that lasted for several days. Besides fun, the festival also has deep meaning for the local residents.
Sitges also has many museums and art galleries. Combined with artistic houses architecture, this city is a perfect place for those interested in art and design. As the home of Spain famous artist, Santiago Rusinol, Sitges become a must visit place for creative people. The city has three big museums which are Museu Marical, Museu Romántic, and Museu Cau Ferrat. All of them contain artifacts and artworks from old time. You may need to check the opening hours for the museum because it may be closed due to the special events held in the city. Around the museum, you can find art shops and galleries which sell interesting art pieces made by local artists.
