In Europe and America, we know Halloween. On that day, people will rush out of the house in their ghost costumes. Besides US and Europe, there is also a festival in Mexico which is similar but has a different characteristic: the Day of the Dead Festival.

El Dia de Los Muertos: When?

The celebration or locally known as El Dia de Los Muertos Festival, is a day of the dead in Mexico. Traditional celebration begins at midnight on the night of 1 and 2 November of every year. In Mexico, this day even becomes a national holiday.

This festival marks the ninth month of the Aztec solar calendar. The celebration was led by Mictecacíhuatl Goddess or “Lady of Death”, designation for women who will lead the ceremony. If in Halloween the death is something to be feared, in El Dia de Los Muertos, the memories of those who have died is something that should be celebrated.

Where and What to See

El Dia de Los Muertos is usually held in Xcaret Park, Cancun, Mexico. During this great celebration, you can enjoy the festive atmosphere. There, visitors can see the people who use ghost costume festive with a striking color. In two days, the streets in the corners of Mexico met by Death Festival parade. Many people who wear skulls and ornate costumes. They look like dancing skull and skeleton in the streets. In their creepy-looking costumes, the people will do so many attractions such as singing, dancing or decorating their skull costumes as creative as possible.

Besides during the day, the complexity of the graves in Mexico will be filled with people at night. They put candles on the graves of deceased family and prayed. Some of them still wear their creepy skull costumes. There are some of cities which are famous for the most festive Death Festival if you wish to watch this insanely momentous festival. They are Mexico City, Michoacan, Janitzio, and Patzcuaro.

You might think that this festival is only held by the Mexican. But in fact, there are several other countries in Latin America which also organize the Festival of Death such as Brazil, Venezuela and Chile. But still, the Day of the Dead Festival in Mexico is the most famous one.

Besides the festival, you and other travelers can also see the procession of moving the bones of the deceased, the one loved by any family from the cemetery. They will clean the bones, and replace their clothes. While they do the task, the children will do their duty to decorate their family graves with candles and colorful flowers.

During this great celebration, you can also enjoy traditional regional cuisine festival, traditional sweets and tequila. Also, they usually hold handicraft workshops, visual art exhibitions such as painting, drawing, photography and short film screenings. To get there, tourists can take a taxi or bus from Cancun Airport about 1 hour drive.
