Chichen Itza – World’s Largest Pyramids Complex (Mexico)

The majority of people certainly know that Pyramids only located in Egypt. but it is a wrong opinion, in Mexico there is a very wide pyramid complex and became the center of civilization in the past. The pyramid complex known as Chichen Itza. Chichén Itzá is one of the most frequently visited pyramids in Mexico.

Like pyramids in Egypt, the pyramids of Mexico also centuries-old and shrouded in mystery. With exception, the pyramids found in Mexico were not tombs. However, the Mexican pyramid is a large mound with a temple at its peak and the stairs outside that serves as a way to the top. This Complex of pyramids and ancient temple believed to be the center of political and economic activity of Mayan, located in the Yucatan Peninsula (now Mexican territory).

Chichen Itza in the Indian language means “at the mouth of well of the people”. This site on July 2007, was chosen as one of the seven wonders of the world chosen by 100 million people via email and sms (short message service) that is held by the Swiss Foundation.

Chichen Itza was founded by a king of Toltec tribe called Quetzalcoatl who came to the Yucatan Peninsula with his troops. At that time, the Mayans had lived in the area, then together with Toltec tribe they began to build temples and pyramids. it can be summarized that the peak period of Chichen Itza is a mixture of Toltec and Mayan cultures.

This temple complex is quite spacious and each temple apart from each other. In the middle stands the temple of El Castilo (Palace), which was completely renovated. Every 21 March and 23 September where day and night have same time range. At the day, the steps of the temple will show unique shadows where our eyes will see lot of snakes climb the temple. But the next day at the same time we can see the snakes go down from  top of the temple.

One of the largest temple established in Chichen Itza area is Kukulkan. Temple of Kukulkan have a form of stepped pyramid with terraces. On each side of the pyramid there are stairs to the top. At the peak there is an entrance to the room of King’s Kukulkan crown. Depictions of human sacrifice and terrible blood rituals are painted on the walls of temples telling the dark tale of brutal tradition.

At the Chichen Itza complex there also a statue named Red Jaguar. At this place often held human sacrifices. There are also found eight statues of Chac Mool, Human shaped statue in sitting position. There are also two walls with same height in this complex. Arena between the two walls was used by Mayans to play ball.

The one labeled “Chichen Itza is Largest Pyramid Complex of Mexico” is actually from Teotihuacan, which is in central Mexico, and not the Yucatan Peninsula. The picture labeled “Pyramids and Temples of Chichen Itza” is actually Palenque, which is in Chiapas, Mexico in the south. Thank you for giving me a good example to show my students the importance of fact checking :)
